The Bongo movie series 'Jua Kali' has stirred heated online debates following director Lamata Leah recent decision to replace former lead character, Marianne Mdee, famously known as Mimi Mars, from the film.

Mimi Mars has been replaced by Elizabeth Michael, better known as Lulu inside Jua Kali

In an Instagram update posted by Lamata on April 5, 2024, specific reasons weren't given for the sudden cast changes, leaving fans of the series in shock.

The post reads: "Maisha Magic Bongo (MMB) channel informs viewers and fans of the Jua Kali series that, due to unavoidable circumstances and after discussions with the stakeholders, a decision has been reached to replace the actress who played the role of Maria (Marianne Mdee). Elizabeth Michael (Lulu) will be taking on that role. MMB would like to extend sincere thanks to Marianne for her contribution to the industry, especially for her lead role in Jua Kali. Welcome aboard, Elizabeth, to the DStv family,”

Following the announcement, many fans expressed disappointment, especially considering Mimi Mars' improving health status since her accident.

Rachel Wilfred, a dedicated of the series, lamented that the new portrayal of Maria lacked the vulnerability that Mimi Mars brought to the character.

“The new portrayal of Maria lacks the vulnerability that Mimi Mars brought to the character. In my view, Lamata may have overlooked this aspect, and it doesn't sit well with me. If we aim for international standards, we could elevate our content even more. After all, the series has already garnered considerable attention,” she shares

Similarly, Miriam Rashid noted a discrepancy in Lulu's performance compared to Mimi Mars' exceptional embodiment of the character.

“Lulu is a very talented actress, but truth be told, Maria (Mimi Mars) really embodied that character exceptionally. There's something off about Lulu's portrayal of this character,” says Ms Rashid

Despite criticisms, there were supporters like Joshua Mkana, who believed in Lulu's talent and urged for patience to see her interpretation of Maria.

He says, “I have faith in Lulu's ability to shine, given her talent as an actress. It's simply a matter of audiences adjusting to the change. Let's allow her some time to see if she can capture the essence that Mimi Mars brought to the character of Maria.”

Jennifer Thompson suggested that fans should temper their reactions, emphasizing anticipation for Lulu's performance.

“Personally, I've been eagerly anticipating Lulu's appearance in this series, and finally, my wishes have come true. I believe she will do well. Now, all that's left is for people to sit back and see the new Maria in a different light,” she shares.

Lamata's recent post saw Lulu commenting on the intensity of filming, expressing exhaustion just after the first day back.

Amidst the discussions, Mimi Mars has remained silent on the matter since her return to good health.

The alterations in the cast of 'Jua Kali' have ignited a passionate conversation within the fan base, with opinions divided on the changes and the future direction of the series.
