  • The Council slapped Madee with a Sh3 million fine and banned him from performing until the fine is paid.

Dar es Salaam. Bongo Flava star Madee faces hot water over his new song ‘Nakojoa Pazuri’, with the Tanzania Arts Council (Basata) hitting him with a hefty fine and an indefinite suspension.

The Council slapped Madee with a Sh3 million fine and banned him from performing until the fine is paid.

In a statement issued today, December 14, 2023, and signed by acting General Secretary Dr Kedmon Mapana, the Council accused Madee of violating the 2018 regulations and the 2023 guide on ethics in artworks.

They allege that ‘Nakojoa Pazuri’, released on December 13, 2023, contains content deemed inappropriate.

Convinced of Madee's intentional breach, the Council demanded the song's removal from all social media and digital platforms. Additionally, they banned any further performance or playback of the song anywhere.

The sanctions don't stop with Madee. The producer of the song, Mr T Touch, and the person who uploaded it online were each fined Sh1 million.

This action by the Arts Council has ignited controversy among fans and artists alike. Some support the Council's decision, emphasizing the need for responsible artistic expression.

Others criticize the move as censorship, arguing for artistic freedom within legal boundaries.

The debate surrounding ‘Nakojoa Pazuri’ and Madee's punishment highlights the ongoing struggle to balance artistic expression with social responsibility for artistes.
