Lowassa rally goers die in road mishap

Lindi. Eight people were killed after being hit by a vehicle that was returning from a campaign rally which was addressed by Chadema’s presidential contestant Edward Lowassa.
Following the incident, the house of CCM’s Lindi regional publicity secretary, Mr Khalfani Mndanje, was set on fire by an angry mob that claimed Mr Mandanje. He was behind the wheel of the vehicle that hit the victims.
Residents of Lindi township were in grief following the incident that occurred at around o6.30pm on Tuesday at the junction of Jamhuri and Uhuru streets.
Lindi Regional Police Commander Renatha Mzinga named the injured persons as Mr Shungi Muhiddin, 29, Mr Husein Hamisi, 29, Ms Agnes Justine, 21, Ms Ashura Selemani, 35, Ms Monica Frank, 24, Ms Kuruthumu Nassoro, 27, Mr Yusufu Karimu, 19 and Leila Ramadhani, 10.
The police boss said during the fateful day, Mandanje was driving a Nissan Sunny Saloon which hit the campaign rally goers as returned home.
Ms Mzinga said some people took the law into their own hands by breaking Mr Mandanje’s car windoows, after which a group of not more than 20 people went to the house of Mandanje and torched it.
Mr Mzinga said the police in the region are holding six persons following the incident.
Lindi Regional Hospital Medical Officer, Dr Kasanga, confirmed to have received five injured persons. Four were treated and discharged while Ms Asha Selemani, who sustained head and mouth injuries, was still admitted and receiving further medical treatment.
