Moshi tycoon says bye to politics after loss in polls

A prominent businessman, who unsuccessfully contested the Moshi Urban parliamentary seat on the CCM, Mr Davis Mosha.

What you need to know:

Mr Davis Mosha said from now on, he will concentrate on his business, blaming his failure on some politicians within the ruling party who, he claimed, were only interested in financial gains rather than the welfare of the people.

Moshi. A prominent businessman, who unsuccessfully contested the Moshi Urban parliamentary seat on the Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM) ticket during last week’s General Election, has said goodbye to politics.

Mr Davis Mosha said from now on, he will concentrate on his business, blaming his failure on some politicians within the ruling party who, he claimed, were only interested in financial gains rather than the welfare of the people.

Addressing hundreds of his followers at the Railway grounds, Mr Mosha said it would take years for Moshi to have leaders who really are committed to the development of the area.

He remarked that there were many cases of abuse of office, including misappropriation of funds in Moshi Municipality allegedly by key officials and responsible leaders are not keen to attend to problems bedevilling the local authority.

“CCM leaders in Kilimanjaro are hyprocrites. They are not committed to see the party winning elections but only interested in fattening their pockets. That is why the party has lost,” he charged.

Earlier, the CCM chairperson in Moshi Urban District Ms Elizabeth Minde, said she was not happy with Mr Mosha’s decision to quit politics.

She said that the party would implement the pledges the businessman made during election campaigns.

She said the defeat in elections was something normal and that CCM must prepare for the next elections in 2020 if it is committed to reclaiming votes it lost to the opposition in Moshi during the past elections.

Moshi and Kilimanjaro Region in general, has been a stronghold of the opposition Chadema since the restoration of the multi-party system in the early 1990s.

The Opposition has been winning parliamnetary seats almost at will since 1995 when, for the first time in years, elections involved several political parties.
