6 Bagamoyo council workers killed, 10 injured in accident

Eyewitness said the cause of the accident was speeding by a sand struck that was overtaking a Toyota Vitz before colliding with a convoy of vehicles that carried council’s workers and members of the Parliamentary Committee on Good Governance and Local Government.

Bagamoyo. Six workers of the Bagamoyo District Council in Coast Region have died in a ghastly motor accident that involved four vehicles including two vans of the council.

Eyewitness said the cause of the accident was speeding by a sand struck that was overtaking a Toyota Vitz before colliding with a convoy of vehicles that carried council’s workers and members of the Parliamentary Committee on Good Governance and Local Government.

The witnesses said soon after the Vitz overtook the truck driven by Josephat Eliyatinga in Mapinga Bridge area, suddenly it met with the convoy and the driver failed to apply breaks. The truck then came to a head-on-collision with a Nissan Patrol and a Land Rover, property of the Bagamoyo District Council.

Speaking to reporters shortly after bodies and injured persons arrived at the Bagamoyo District Hospital, medical officer Amiri Batenga confirmed the receipt of five bodies and 10 injured persons following the accident.

Dr Batenga named those who lost their lives as Halid Hassan,40, the driver of the director of the district council; Makame Ally ,40, the driver of Bagamoyo’s Tasaf; Hilda Msele ,59, head of the planning department of the council; Tunsiime Duncan, the district lawyer and Ludovick Palangyo, the district economist.

He also mentioned the names of the injured persons, who received first aid before being rushed to the Muhimbili National Hospital as the council director, Ibrahimu Matovu, who suffered a broken leg; water engineer Juliana Msagha, who was seriously injured; treasurer George Mashauri, who sustained injuries in his face; head of the department for social development Juliasi Mwanganda, who broke one of his arms and Bagamoyo’s Tasaf coordinator Doroth Njetile, who broke both of her legs.

Those who received treatment in Bagamoyo and discharged were Amadeus Mbuta, Bagamoyo’s Tasaf adviser; Tuuliza Halid and Amari Mohamed, who are ordinary persons and district public service officer Grace Mbilinyi.

Deputy Minister for State in the President’s Office (Regional Administrations and Local Government), Selemani Jaffo and the deputy chairman of the committee, George Lubeleje, said all members of the committee, who were on the trip were greatly shocked.
