Dar es Salaam. The Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) continues to demonstrate its commitment to the environment by creating a miniature forest within the premises of the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) in Dar es Salaam.

During the event, Ms Atteeya Sumar, the Country Director of AKF, emphasized the importance of environmental preservation for the benefit of future generations.

"We cannot allow the next generation to miss out on experiencing the natural wonders of our world as it existed in the past. It is our responsibility to safeguard the green and blue hues so that others may witness their beauty," she said.

Ms Sumar highlighted the significance of future generations being able to appreciate the splendour of nature and emphasised that AKF is actively working towards environmental conservation.

Forty-three microforests

"We have already established 43 microforests in various schools across Dar es Salaam. These trees not only contribute to environmental protection but also serve as valuable educational resources," she revealed.

Mr Lawrence Oundo, the Deputy Representative of (Unicef) in Tanzania, acknowledged that the initiative, though small in scale, carries substantial implications.

"This may seem like a small endeavour, but its impact is significant. By starting here, we set the stage to expand these efforts elsewhere," Mr Oundo expressed, expressing his satisfaction with AKF's commitment to environmental stewardship.

The AKF's project slogan for addressing climate change is 'Small changes, Big impact; Let's go green.' This motto underscores the foundation's campaign to support global initiatives combating the effects of climate change.

In line with this campaign, AKF aims to restore nature by planting 1.5 million mangrove trees along the Indian Ocean coastline.

Furthermore, AKF intends to initiate a project focused on planting small trees in 50 different schools across the country, with the completion of these goals imminent.
