Azizi sentenced to pay Sh259m over 53 counts

Dar es Salaam. Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court has ordered a city businessman Akram Azizi to pay a Sh259 million fine after he pleaded guilty to 53 counts of economic sabotage he was facing.
The counts include being found in illegal possession of government trophies as well as illegal possession of firearms.
Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court ruled that Azizi, after pleading guilty, should pay the fine or risk a 20-year jail term.
The case came for hearing at the Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court yesterday but the accused, through his lawyer Alex Mgongolwa, asked the court to read afresh the charges laid against him.
After the charges were read the accused pleaded guilty. Azizi was also accused of being involved in money laundering and being found in possession of government trophies, firearms and thousands of ammunitions. He committed the offences between October 30 and 31. In October 30 at Oyster Bay, the accused was said to have been found in possession of six elephant tusks valued at $45,000 (Sh103 million) property of the United Republic of Tanzania without any permit from the director of wildlife.
