Barley farmers in Monduli gain new skills to boost yields

Monduli. Barley farmers in Monduli Juu have received practical training and expert guidance aimed at improving yields and crop quality. More than 200 participants, including farmers, community leaders, and agricultural stakeholders, took part in the programme.

The training was part of the annual Barley Growers’ Day, organised with support from Tanzania Breweries Plc (TBL). The event was also attended by local government leaders such as Monduli District Administrative Secretary (DAS) Muhsin Kassim.

Mr Kassim reaffirmed the government’s commitment to agricultural growth, saying farmers remain central to the country’s development.

“Farmers are the backbone of our nation. Today we celebrate their contribution and reaffirm our commitment to supporting them through research, quality extension services, and access to profitable markets,” he said.

TBL, one of the largest buyers of locally grown barley, thanked farmers for their consistent supply of the crop, which remains a key raw material in its brewing operations.

The company has supported smallholder farmers over the years with secure purchase contracts and training in modern farming techniques.

TBL’s Director of Legal and Corporate Affairs, Neema Temba, said the company is committed to strengthening partnerships with farmers and promoting sustainable practices.

“Events like this remind us of the important role farmers play not only in food security but also in supporting industries such as ours,” she said.

The programme also featured demonstration plots and farmer-to-farmer learning sessions, with discussions on climate change, post-harvest losses, and access to quality inputs. Stakeholders called for stronger collaboration between farmers, the private sector, and government to boost productivity and sustainability in the barley value chain.
