Concern as 300,000 hectares of forest destroyed annually

Mtwara. Human activities are rapidly causing deforestation with the current data showing that 372,000 hectares of forest are destroyed every year.

This was disclosed by the Mtwara Regional Commissioner (RC), Mr Gelasius Byakanwa during his meeting with officials from the ministry of Tourism and Natural Resources and those from the President’s office (Regional Administrations and Local Governments).

“If it is possible the ministry of Lands, Housing and Human Settlement Developments should be involved in protecting the environment otherwise danger is looming,” said the commissioner.

Mr Byakanwa advised district councils to establish forest reserves as a way of fighting climatic change.
