Digital push and inclusion lead Airtel Africa’s 2025 agenda

Dar es Salaam. Chief Executive Officer of Airtel Africa, Mr Sunil Taldar, has unveiled the company’s 2025 Sustainability Report, highlighting substantial gains in digital inclusion, financial access, and environmental responsibility across its 14 African markets.

“We are not just expanding networks, we are building bridges to education, financial security and sustainable growth for Africa’s next generation,” he said.

“This year’s achievements, from connecting over 2,000 schools in partnership with UNICEF to serving nearly 45 million Airtel Money customers, demonstrate how technology can foster gender balance and uplift communities.”

The report outlines a marked increase in network coverage, with Airtel now reaching 81.2 percent of the population in its operating regions—up from 80.4 percent the previous year.

A total of 36,159 4G sites have been rolled out, more than 15,000 of which are situated in rural areas, backed by a $670 million investment in infrastructure.

In terms of financial inclusion, Airtel Money customers rose by over 17 percent to 44.6 million, with women making up 44.2 percent of that base.

The number of Airtel Money agents also grew to 1.7 million, supporting both access and local entrepreneurship.

“Our services are empowering individuals and communities, especially women, to actively participate in the digital economy,” Mr Taldar said.

Airtel also reported it had connected 2,176 schools to the internet free of charge—nearly doubling its 2023/24 figure. Employment initiatives have further been supported through the expansion of its agent network.

Environmentally, the company converted 500 off-grid sites to on-grid power, continuing its shift away from diesel reliance. Additionally, 93 percent of waste generated was recycled, marking a 3 percent improvement from the previous year.

The Sustainability Report 2025 aligns with both the Global Reporting Initiative and GSMA industry standards.

Airtel Africa, which serves over 156 million customers across sub-Saharan Africa, says it remains committed to transforming lives through inclusive digital and financial services while maintaining responsible business practices.
