  • PCCB Geita Regional Head Mr James Ruge said the forum brought together stakeholders from across sectors—including government agencies, the judiciary, financial institutions, religious leaders, and civil society—to develop joint strategies to curb corruption.

Geita. Corruption hampers business operations and undermines the well-being of entire communities, Geita Gold Mine Limited (GGML) Managing Director Duran Archery has said.

Mr Archery made the remarks on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, while opening a stakeholders’ forum on the fight against corruption, jointly organised by GGML and the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB).

“It destroys public trust in institutions and derails development. No single actor can win this battle alone—collaboration is key,” he said.

Mr Archery revealed that GGML, in partnership with the PCCB, will conduct 28 public engagement sessions at village and neighbourhood levels, supported by radio programmes to raise awareness about the dangers of corruption and promote community participation in tackling it.

He emphasised the importance of broad-based efforts in building systems that are resilient to corrupt practices.

“With general elections approaching later this year, the PCCB is intensifying efforts to eliminate all forms of electoral malpractice,” he added.

“As part of this initiative, we are working closely with GGML, which funds Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects. Our role is to audit these projects and ensure implementation aligns with the allocated budgets,” Mr Ruge said.

The forum was convened to explore coordinated, cross-sector strategies for preventing and combating corruption—particularly in mining communities, where high-value transactions heighten the risk.

Geita Regional Administrative Secretary (RAS) Mr Mohamed Gombati also addressed the forum, warning that corruption stalls development, weakens service delivery, deters investment, and undermines governance structures.

He said corruption remains a major obstacle to justice, equality, and economic progress, and must be addressed collectively if Tanzania is to meet its development goals.

“Corruption undermines public services, erodes justice, diminishes equality, and halts development,” Mr Gombati said.

“If we do not unite to end it, we will continue complaining without making progress. We must commit to honesty, transparency, and collective responsibility,” he added.

He noted that some public complaints about employment or tendering in the mining sector stem from a limited understanding of operational procedures.

The RAS added that the forum would be instrumental in raising awareness about employment systems, tendering processes, and lawful participation in mining activities.
