Ireland, UNFPA sign co-financing agreement in Tanzania

Dar es Salaam. The government of Ireland has signed two co-financing agreements worth Euro1.4 million with the United Nation Population Fund (UNFPA) to support Census Data Analysis and Reproductive Health and Rights in Tanzania.

Most of the funds will be channeled to National Bureau of Statistics (NBS)to conduct further detailed analysis on the 2022 population and housing dataset, including on the issue of gender equality .


The funds will also help to support sexual and reproductive health and rights targeting communities mainly in Kigoma region.

Irish ambassador to Tanzania Ms Mary O'Neil  said on Sunday at the signing ceremony that the census analysis will enable the government to understand the specific needs of women, men, girls, boys, all individuals and groups with needs, including people with disabilities.

"We are happy to support UNFPA due to continued partnership, we have in Tanzania. Ireland is proud to support the initiative. We believe that no one should be left behind in accessing quality services to improve their lives, "she said.

According to her, results analysis will enable effective utilisation of national resources for evidence based planning, monitoring, evaluation and reporting on Tanzania's global and regional commitments. As well as national policies and programs such as National Plan of Action on Violence Against Women and Children.



"Census analysis is another important milestone for promoting gender equality and women empowerment in Tanzania. It also represent an opportunity to explore systematically some of the issues that were raised during the dialogue hosted by  the embassy,” said O'Neil.

UNFPA country representative Mr Mark Bryan thanked Ireland for their continued dedication to achieve the sustainable Development Goals in Tanzania.

"The funds offered will be implemented by UNFPA in collaboration with the government of Tanzania and national actors," he said.

The two year project dubbed better data for sustainable development will start January 2023 -2024 while the other project My Youth My Power a one project to support five districts in Kigoma.
