Kilombero Sugar celebrates 23 years of leadership training through MIT programme

Morogoro. Kilombero Sugar Company has marked 23 years of nurturing leaders through its annual Managers in Training (MIT) Conference, held this week in Morogoro.

The conference, which brought together government officials, industry executives and young managers, showcased the company’s continued commitment to developing future leaders for Tanzania’s sugar industry.

Speaking at the event, Kilombero Sugar’s Human Resources Director, Diana Mwakitwange, said the program is a clear demonstration of the company’s long-term vision.

“The aim of this program is not just to train company managers, but to prepare leaders who will guide this nation for years and generations to come,” she said.

Representing the Guest of Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Dr Erick Mgaya, applauded Kilombero Sugar’s investment in people.

“This program is not only a milestone for Kilombero Sugar but also a national treasure. Every graduate who comes out of it becomes more innovative, efficient, and a source of pride for Tanzania,” he said.

Kilombero Sugar’s Managing Director, Guy Williams, noted that the program has already trained over 80 young managers, many of whom now hold senior roles across different organizations.

“Leadership is not inherited—it is taught. For 23 years we have equipped emerging managers with skills, and many of them are now thriving in leadership positions,” he said.

Williams also urged the government to strengthen the National Sugar Institute by allocating part of the Skills Development Levy to bridge skills and knowledge gaps in the sector.

Sharing his personal experience, Ambroce Heri, a top student from the Plantation Agriculture Department, said:

“This program has changed my outlook not just on agriculture but also on leadership and giving back to the community.”

Since its inception, 85 graduates have completed the MIT program, with 27 currently employed at Kilombero Sugar.

The event also highlighted the importance of linking academic training with practical industry experience.

At the close of the conference, stakeholders pledged to expand the program, strengthen ties with educational institutions, and explore similar initiatives in other industries.
