Morogoro. Kilombero Sugar Company has officially launched a community-driven ICT Empowerment Programme for schools, set to benefit more than 1,000 students in the Kilombero Valley, Morogoro.

The initiative aims to equip surrounding secondary schools with digital tools and skills essential for advancing Tanzania’s national agenda on ICT in education.

As part of the first phase, Nyange Secondary School in Kilombero District and Lyahila Secondary School in Kilosa District received 35 refurbished desktop computers, 10 desks and ongoing technical support from the company’s ICT unit.

Director of Human Resources at Kilombero Sugar, Diana Mwakitwange, said the project aligns with national priorities including the Digital Education Strategy 2024/25–2029/30 and the National Artificial Intelligence for Education Guideline. “This programme complements ongoing reforms to transform Tanzania’s learning environment and prepare students for a digital future,” she noted.

The donated computers, previously used for office work, have been upgraded with essential applications in line with the forthcoming National Digital Guideline for Schools and Teacher Training Colleges (2025), which seeks to ensure affordable and reliable ICT infrastructure in teaching and learning.

Explaining the selection process, Communications and Stakeholder Relations Manager, Victor Byemelwa, said the schools were chosen based on readiness for digital learning, including availability of ICT teachers, dedicated computer labs and capacity to support the national digital education agenda.

“This is a long-term initiative. We will monitor usage and impact of the equipment while rolling out the programme in phases,” he said.

Guest of Honour at the launch, Kilombero District Commissioner Advocate Dunstan Kyobya, praised the initiative, affirming government commitment to integrating digital tools in teaching and administration. “We shall continue to promote innovation, research and collaboration in digital education to meet technological and industrial demands,” he said, urging other stakeholders to follow Kilombero Sugar’s example.

Nyange Secondary School Headmaster, Gabriel Lyaluu, expressed gratitude, saying the contribution had come at a crucial moment: “We now have the means to put the national digital education agenda into practice.”

For students, the project is already inspiring. “I have always dreamed of learning more about ICT. With these computers, I can now explore opportunities in this field and make better use of my time at school,” said Amina Ally, a Form Four student at Lyahila Secondary School.

The company confirmed the programme will gradually expand to reach more schools across the Kilombero Valley, supporting Tanzania’s wider digital transformation in education.
