Dar es Salaam. Chadema national chairman Tundu Lissu has requested permission from the Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court to defend himself, citing restricted access to his lawyers while in custody.
Lissu, who is facing charges of treason and publishing false information online, made the request on Monday, June 16, 2025, as hearings in both cases resumed before different magistrates.
He told the court that he has been unable to hold confidential discussions with his legal team at the prison, prompting his decision to take up personal defence.
Both cases are proceeding at different stages. In the treason case, the State was expected to update the court on the status of the investigation. Meanwhile, the case involving false information was scheduled to begin its full hearing, with the prosecution set to start presenting its evidence.
However, the hearing in the latter case is contingent upon the outcome of a preliminary application filed by the prosecution, seeking protective measures for witnesses who are expected to testify.
The application is currently under consideration and will determine whether the main hearing proceeds as planned.
