Dar es Salaam. Repair work on the MV Magogoni ferry, a vital link between Kigamboni and Magogoni in Dar es Salaam, is slated for completion in December 2024, heralding relief for commuters in the city.
This announcement was made on Thursday, May 30, 2024, by the Deputy Minister of Works, Mr Godfrey Kasekenya, during a parliamentary session in Dodoma.
Responding to inquiries from the Kigamboni Member of Parliament, Dr Faustine Ndungulile, regarding the status of the MV Magogoni, currently undergoing repairs in Kenya, Mr Kasekenya assured that the ferry would soon return to serve the public.
The repair project, valued at Sh7.5 billion, was initiated in February 2023 by the Tanzania Electrical and Mechanical Agency (Temesa), signifying a significant investment in the city’s transportation infrastructure.
However, the cost of repairs has been a subject of contention, especially considering the ferry's initial purchase price of Sh8 billion.
Moreover, debates have arisen regarding whether the repair contract should have been awarded to a foreign company instead of local firms, underscoring broader discussions about government procurement practices.
The MV Magogoni ferry, operational since 2008, boasts a capacity to carry 500 tonnes, accommodating approximately 2,000 passengers and 60 small vehicles.
Its return to service promises to ease transportation challenges and enhance connectivity between the two vital coastal points.
