Da es Salaam. The National Identification Authority (Nida) has terminated the contracts of more than 590 temporary employees and plans to review those of more than 800 permanent employees in a bid to increase efficiency and reduce costs.
This was revealed in Dar es Salaam yesterday by Nida acting director general Dr Modestus Kipilimba, at a press conference. He said the authority’d workforce and productivity dodn’t match.
Dr Kipilimba said NIDA has a capacity of producing 24,000 national identity cards but it has been producing only 1200 cards per day.
“NIDA has a total of 802 permanent employees and 597 temporary employees, meaning that one person produces one identity card daily; we can’t continue like this, and so, we are terminating all temporary employees’ contracts,” said Dr Kipilimba.
The Nida boss, who was appointed after President Magufuli fired the then NIDA DG Dickson Maimu at the end of January, stressed that NIDA would follow all the procedures of contract termination, including paying them compensation.
“We will also review the contracts of permanent employees and will send those we would copnsider a surplus to the ministry responsoble for public service for reassignment,” the Nida boss said.
President Magufuli sacked Maimu and three other officials following the questionable expenditure of Sh179.6 billion by Nida in the national identity cards scheme.
Dr Kipilimba also told reporters that NIDA will also review all contracts that the authority had signed with various contractors, and officials we would deem to have been involved in irregularities would face legal action.
In another development, Dr Kipilimba said Nida was set to receive a total of 5000 Biometric Voters Registration (BVR) kits from the National Electoral Commission (NEC).
The move according would enable it to complete the process of registering people before the December 31, 2016 deadline.
