  • The Pangaboi Health Centre is expected to serve not only Nachunyu but also surrounding villages, bringing a long-awaited solution to the region's healthcare needs.

Mtama. District Medical Officer for Mtama, Dr Tasilo Lupapa, said residents of Nachunyu Ward in Lindi Region will no longer endure long walks in search of medical care, following the construction of a new health centre at Pangaboi.

Speaking on Tuesday, 27 May 2025, Dr Lupapa said the Pangaboi Health Centre, once completed, will serve over 6,000 residents who previously faced significant challenges due to the lack of nearby healthcare services.

“This centre will transform access to healthcare for people in Nachunyu,” he said. “So far, we have spent Sh 500 million, but the project requires over Sh 600 million to complete. We are asking the Government for additional funding to finalise the construction.”

Dr Lupapa also highlighted poor road infrastructure as one of the major setbacks that delayed progress. “We urge the Government not only to support us with more funds but also to improve the road network to ensure smooth delivery of materials and timely completion.”

Member of Parliament for Mtama, Mr Nape Nnauye, echoed these concerns, noting that Nachunyu Ward — a major cashew-producing area — had long struggled with inadequate health services and poor roads.

“The lack of a health facility and decent roads has been a persistent issue in Nachunyu. The bad road condition contributed significantly to delays in completing this health centre. I am grateful to President Samia Suluhu Hassan for bringing this critical project to our community,” said Mr Nnauye.

After laying the foundation stone at the site, National Torch race bearer Mr Ismail Ally Ussi praised the Government’s efforts to reduce healthcare challenges in the area. He urged the local community to safeguard the newly constructed infrastructure.

“I commend the leaders for their good supervision of this project, and I call upon residents to take care of these facilities so they serve generations to come,” he said.

Local resident Ms Sada Shabani expressed joy over the development, recalling the difficulty they previously faced in accessing health services.

“We used to walk more than 10 kilometres to reach the nearest health centre. Today, we are filled with joy because services are now close by. We also thank our MP for his tireless efforts,” she said.
