School aims to raise Sh800m for special needs students

Bukoba. Rugambwa Girls Secondary School needs about Sh800 million to repair its infrastructure and construct a fence and a classroom for students with disabilities.
The secondary school headmistress, Ms Kagemulo Lupanka, said ahead of the 50th anniversary of the school that the number of students, which stood at 288 during the inception in 1965, had shot up to over 850 students using the same infrastructure.
Ms Lupanka said students with disabilities have to share the same buildings are other students. This is hazardous to them as most of the facilities are not safe for students with disabilities.
“We intend to raise Sh800 million during the commemoration,” she said, explaining that the money would be spent on the construction of a building for special needs pupils and rehabilitation of the entire infrastructure.
A special needs teacher, Ms Rehema Sylvester, said the school was not designed to accommodate the disabled, who were first enrolled in 2010, as it lacked a friendly infrastructure for them.
One of the school alumni, Ms Alvera Kashushula, called on her fellow alumni and other stakeholders to consider supporting the school for it to raise the funds required for the improvement of its infrastructure.
