Sheikh surprised as politicians turn spokespersons of religious institutions

Dodoma regional Sheikh, Mustapha Shaaban.

What you need to know:

Sheikh Shaaban made the statement on Friday,  during Eid ul Fitr prayers held at Gadaffi Mosque in the city.

Dodoma. Dodoma regional Sheikh, Mustapha Shaaban said Members of Parliament (MPs) should actively take their roles as people’s representative in the parliament instead of turning into spokespersons of religious institutions.

Sheikh Shaaban made the statement on Friday,  during Eid ul Fitr prayers held at Gadaffi Mosque in the city.

He said there were a number of legislators who have purposely abandoned their obligations and made themselves spokespersons of religious institutions which in principle had already placed official representatives for that purpose.

“In case the government and religious institutions engage in misunderstandings, these are the people who are supposed to communicate the message to the public based on procedures put by respective institutions,” he said, adding,

"Therefore, religious leaders should be left alone, free of interference because they are the ones directly involved with spiritual issues.”

He noted that the new tradition of letting everybody to speak on behalf of religious institutions posed threats to peace and security.

According to him, leaving such people with little knowledge of spiritual issues was like playing with sparks of fire which could turn disastrous to people and properties.

He said spiritual issues should be left in the hands of Muslim and Christian clerics.
