Zanzibar. A landmark project that promises to transform the skyline of Zanzibar's southeast coast has officially broken ground, with a signing ceremony sealing the partnership between Shivo Towers and Mediterranean Group East Africa, a regional leader in advanced foundation engineering.

The agreement was signed in Zanzibar by Achim Braun on behalf of Mediterranean Group and Richard Ashby on behalf of Shivo.

Set just 100 metres from the Indian Ocean, right in the heart of Paje Beach—one of the island's most desirable coastal destinations—Shivo Towers is poised to become one of the tallest and most ambitious developments in Zanzibar's history.

The location, however, presents unique engineering challenges, with sandy substrate reaching up to seven metres deep so close to the shoreline.

To address these challenges, developers have turned to Mediterranean Group East Africa, a specialist piling contractor with nearly two decades of experience in Tanzania and the wider region.

"We had to turn to one of the best in the business whose profile in pile drilling in Tanzania and beyond speaks volumes," Ashby told reporters.

Since 2007, the company has been at the forefront of delivering advanced foundation solutions, pile drilling, and engineering services across East Africa.

It has been involved in some of the region's most challenging infrastructure projects—from over-the-ocean road bridges to airport control towers.

In Tanzania, Mediterranean Group's track record includes foundation works for the Tazara and Ubungo interchanges in Dar es Salaam, the raft foundation of the East African Community headquarters in Arusha, a jetty construction at Kilindoni near Mafia Island, and multiple bridge projects in Iringa, Songea, and Dar es Salaam.

They have also worked on the gas project on the shores of Lake Kivu in Rwanda and several Bridges in Burundi

"Building a tower of this scale on a sandy coastal location requires the highest level of technical expertise," Mr Braun noted at the signing.

"Our experience across Tanzania and the region has prepared us to deliver safe, durable and future-proof foundation solutions for Shivo Towers."

Mr Ashby, representing Shivo, said the project marks a new chapter in Zanzibar's real estate growth. "Shivo Towers is not only about building height—it is about setting new standards for quality, design and resilience on one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world. This partnership ensures we are building on the strongest possible foundations."

Mediterranean Group East Africa currently operates in Tanzania, Kenya, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Uganda, and Djibouti, supported by a technical and managerial team with experience spanning Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and Europe.

With Paje already renowned for its pristine beaches, kitesurfing, and growing tourism industry, Shivo Towers is expected to elevate the area's appeal, creating a new landmark for both investment and leisure.

The signing ceremony signals the start of a project that combines world-class engineering with one of Zanzibar's most iconic locations—ushering in a new era of coastal development built on solid foundations.
