Dar es Salaam. A person accused of killing former member of the Constitutional Review Commission (CRC) Sengondo Mvungi, has asked the Kisutu Resident Mgistrate’s Court to set him and his nine co-accused free.

Mr Masunga Msukuma, who is among 10 accused persons charged with the murder, made the request yesterday after the prosecution seemed to have failed to complete investigations for more than three years.

His co-accused are Mr Longishu Losingo, who was the watchman at Mvungi’s residence, Mr Chibango Magozi, Mr John Mayunga, Mr Juma Kangungu, Mr Paul Mdionondo, Mr Mianda Mlewa, Mr Zacharia Mseze, Mr Msigwa Matonya and Mr Ahmed Kitabu.

They were arraigned in 2013 and charged with attacking Mvungi on November 3, 2013 at his Msakuzi Kiswegere residence in Kinondoni District, Dar es Salaam, and causing his death a few days later.

Earlier during the hearing yesterday, the prosecution, led by State Attorney Patrick Mwita, informed the Resident Magistrate Thomas Simba that the file of the case was being reviewed at the Director of Criminal Investigation (DCI). Magistrate Simba adjourned the case to November 21 for another mention.

It was alleged that a group of robbers stormed the residence of Mvungi at night that fateful day. He was critically wounded as he attempted to fight off the machete-wielding assailants.

Mvungi died in South Africa hospital after a nine-day battle with injuries he suffered during the attack. He was first admitted to the ICU of the Muhimbili Orthopedic Institute (Moi) and later referred to Milpark Hospital in South Africa.
