Kigoma. Residents of Kigadye village and neighbouring areas in Kasulu District, Kigoma Region, have been prohibited from drawing water from the Malagarasi River for domestic use or consuming fish from its waters, following the deaths of aquatic life including fish and frogs.
The ban was announced on Friday, September 26, 2025 by Kigoma Regional Commissioner Simon Sirro, who visited the site with the regional security committee. He ordered an urgent investigation into the cause of the deaths.
“It is crucial that residents avoid using the river water for domestic purposes, including drinking, and refrain from consuming fish while awaiting the results of the ongoing investigation,” Sirro said.
Sirro added, “We have received reports and witnessed firsthand many dead creatures, including frogs and small fish in the river. We have inspected the surroundings and our security personnel will continue to gather accurate information from the area before further action is taken.”
Kigoma Regional Sanitation and Environment Officer Nesphory Sugu said that, in collaboration with health experts, water samples had been taken for analysis to determine the cause of the mass deaths.
Meanwhile, Kigoma Regional Chief Medical Officer Dr Damas Kayere confirmed that no human cases related to the incident had been reported so far.
He urged residents to visit health centres immediately if they experience any adverse effects from using the river water or consuming fish from it.
