Tanzania faces potential disruptions as strong winds and heavy rainfall forecast

What you need to know:

  • Coastal areas are on high alert, with the potential for flooding and disruptions to economic activities like fishing and maritime transport.

Dar es Salaam. The Tanzania Meteorological Agency (TMA) has issued a five-day weather forecast predicting strong winds, high waves, and heavy rainfall across various regions of the country.

Coastal areas are on high alert, with the potential for flooding and disruptions to economic activities like fishing and maritime transport.

The forecast, starting today, April 16, highlights a high probability of strong winds exceeding 40 kilometers per hour and waves reaching over two meters along the Indian Ocean coast.

This is expected to affect areas around Dar es Salaam, Tanga, Pwani (including the Mafia Islands), Lindi, Mtwara, Unguja, and Pemba Islands.

The impact level is categorised as moderate, with potential flooding and disruptions to daily life.

The following days will see a mix of strong winds and heavy rainfall across different regions. Residents in Dar es Salaam, Morogoro, Tanga, Pwani, Lindi, Mtwara, Unguja, and Pemba should be prepared for localized downpours that could lead to some houses being surrounded by water.

The TMA emphasizes the potential for disruptions to economic activities, particularly those reliant on the sea, such as fishing and maritime transport.

The forecast remains consistent for the next few days, with a moderate probability of both strong winds and heavy rainfall in the aforementioned areas.

TMA advises the public to take precautions, stay informed about the latest weather updates, and be prepared for potential disruptions.

Fishermen are urged to exercise caution while venturing out to sea, and those living in low-lying coastal areas should be vigilant for any signs of flooding.
