No comeback: Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa opts out of 2025 Parliamentary race

Dar es Salaam. Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa will not seek re-election as Member of Parliament for Ruangwa Constituency in the October 2025 General Election, marking the end of his 15-year parliamentary career.
The announcement was made on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, by the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) Secretary for Ruangwa District, Mr Abbas Makwetta, during the party’s ongoing nomination process.
“Hon Majaliwa came today and announced that he will not contest the parliamentary seat again,” Mr Makwetta said.
The CCM nomination window for parliamentary and councillorship aspirants opened on June 28 and is scheduled to close at 4:00pm today.
Mr Majaliwa, who has represented Ruangwa since 2010, was appointed Prime Minister in 2015 during the fifth-phase administration led by the late President John Magufuli.
Speaking to The Citizen’s sister paper, Mwananchi on Wednesday, Mr Makwetta said the Prime Minister arrived at the CCM office at 10:00am but did not collect nomination forms.
“He said he has served the constituency for 15 years, reflected on the journey, and decided to pave the way for the younger generation. However, he urged the people of Ruangwa to ensure that President Samia Suluhu Hassan and President Hussein Mwinyi receive strong electoral support,” Mr Makwetta said.
As of Wednesday morning, five individuals had picked nomination forms to contest the Ruangwa parliamentary seat under CCM.
There has been no official statement from Mr Majaliwa or his office confirming the decision.
On June 26, during a speech in Parliament, Mr Majaliwa had thanked the people of Ruangwa for their long-standing support, saying, “I pray that God continues to strengthen the unity we have, and I would like to inform you that I am coming to collect nomination forms to seek your mandate again.”
Mr Majaliwa leaves public office at the age of 64. He was born on December 22, 1960, in Mnacho Village, Ruangwa District. He is a trained teacher by profession.
