Tanzanian artistes invited to compete in Germany’s Berlin Music Video Awards

Dar es Salaam. Tanzanian artistes have been invited to submit their work for the Berlin Music Video Awards (BMVA), an international competition held annually in Germany that celebrates creativity in music video production.

The invitation was extended by Aviel Silook, the founder and lead coordinator of the awards, during a recent outreach to East African artists, including those from Tanzania.

Mr Silook said the BMVA aims not only to recognise excellence in music video production but also to offer a platform for global exposure, especially to artists from underrepresented regions such as East Africa.

“Our goal goes beyond giving out awards. We want to support artists from all over the world—including East Africa—by giving them international visibility,” he said. “We warmly welcome Tanzanian musicians to take part. We want to see the Swahili language represented on our global stage.”

Silook highlighted that the competition is open to artists across genres including Bongo Flava, Singeli, Taarab, and Afro-fusion, noting that participation could open doors for regional talent to reach new audiences and learn from internationally established musicians.

He encouraged Tanzanian artists to submit high-quality music videos for consideration in the selection process, describing BMVA as a potential stepping stone to larger international platforms.

“Swahili music has a unique sound. We are looking for stories, flavour, and expression through this language,” Silook added, calling on Tanzanian musicians to seize the opportunity.

The BMVA, which has grown in prominence over the years, honours innovation, creativity, and cultural diversity in music video production, with categories that span across artistic direction, cinematography, and performance.
