Dar es Salaam. Tanzanian businesses are set to play a stronger role in the $5 billion East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) following a new training initiative by contractor WASCO ISOAF in partnership with the Small Enterprise Supplier Development Corporation (SESDCorp).
The week-long programme, running from September 22 to 26 at EACOP’s Dar es Salaam offices, is equipping local firms with skills in global compliance standards, including safety protocols, sustainability, procurement readiness and quality, health, safety and environment (QHSE) benchmarks.
EACOP Local Content Manager Neema Kweka said the training was crucial in building a sustainable supply chain.
“Our commitment extends beyond the construction phase. We want to ensure local businesses are not just participants, but key beneficiaries of this national project,” she said, noting that opportunities would also arise during the operational phase. SESDCorp chief executive Killian Nango said the organisation’s mission was to empower Tanzanian enterprises with competencies to thrive.
“This training is just the beginning. We will provide ongoing support and create platforms to link local businesses with potential buyers, ensuring they can compete effectively in supply chains like EACOP,” he said.
WASCO ISOAF representative Jafari Mbaye praised the high turnout, saying it reflected local investors’ interest in the project.
“The knowledge gained will help businesses tap into EACOP opportunities and compete globally,” he said.
Participants also lauded the initiative, with one logistics operator noting it had clarified international requirements such as safety documentation, environmental management and ethical procurement.
The training, part of EACOP’s local content policy, is seen as a key step in ensuring that the economic benefits of the 1,443-kilometre pipeline are embedded within Tanzania, leaving a legacy of skills, competitiveness and sustainable business growth.
