Tanzanians need awareness on stock market investment

What you need to know:
Buying into the stock market is a mouth-watering prospect for many investors across the globe. And Tanzania is also coming up. But how prepared are Tanzanians to take advantage of this new investment drive?

For Tanzania to achieve the poverty alleviation goal, the government should intensify its campaign to raise awareness among the marginalised communities on how they can utilise this economic window. The majority Tanzanians still need education on investing stock exchange.
One way of doing it is to have schools educate students about the stock exchange market, even as a special subject from primary to institutions of higher learning.
Furthermore, the Tanzania Investment Centre (TIC) should take this inititative further to ensure that more companies are listed and their shares available for buying by the public.

The stock exchange or share business is not that popular among many Tanzanians, including so-called elites, who are, by the way, very few. This is a challenge to the government, which should now ensure that a significant number of Tanzanians participate in this line of investment.
One thing that is obvious is that the language being used to promote the buying of shares and investing in the stock market is still too technical, if not too difficult, for common citizens to understand. In the end, they are sidelined from the outset. There is a general belief that the stock market is for the rich and educated. In a nutshell, such opportunities remain a dream to ordinary Tanzanians as long as the level of awareness on investing in the money market is as low as it is today. That’s what the government needs to address, going forward.

I personally know nothing about it (stock market). I think there is need for a countrywide awareness campaign to empower Tanzanians with this new phenomenon; most of us do not know how, let alone why we should be investing our hard-earned money in company shares. I am sure we can do better with a little education on such opportunities.
