TCRA warns service providers via satellite

TCRA Director General Dr Jabiri Bakari.

Dar es Salaam . The Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) has issued a warning to those who do the business of Satellite Televison Services without a valid license together with those who import communication equipment into the country to stop doing so.

Director General of TCRA, Dr. Jabir Bakari, said that the authority has identified the presence of companies and individuals who do business giving television services through satellite without having a valid licence.

Dr. Bakari mentioned that some of them are sensors from Canal Plus and other similar devices which have not been approved by TCRA.

"A notice is hereby given to the General Public and those operating satellite television services without having a valid Support Services (Satellite) licence from TCRA and those importing and distributing communication equipment, including Canal-Plus decoders and other similar equipment which are not type-approved by the Authority to immediately cease operating the said businesses, instead following the rightful procedures to obtain their licences," said Dr. Bakari.

The director added that if they fail to implement the notice, they will take legal and regulatory action without any warning.

Benjamin Haule, who is a sports fan, said TCRA should call the service providers early because their packages are cheap and people can afford them.

"If you hear the prices of those service providers, they are cheap and you get many sports channels, so it is better that they get a license to allow for the competition of service providers," said Haule
