Dar es Salaam. With 2.1 million followers on Twitter, Mr Reginald Mengi, who joined the online news and social networking service in January 2012, was one of the Tanzanians with the highest numbers of followers on twitter.
With his @regmengi Twitter handle, the departed tycoon, started the year 2019 with messages that sought to build harmony among Tanzanians while castigating the spirit divisions and hatred.
On the last day of the year 2018, he twitted:
“You don’t have to do much to be ahead of other people, even one centimetre will do. I wish you great 2019 full of peace, happiness, love and lots and lots of success in whatever you do. Remain blessed, always. Happy 2019”.
Having stepped into 2019, he twitted for the first time on January 7, and this is what he said:
“May I humbly advise my fellow Tanzanians to make 2019 a year of reconciliation and forgiveness. Hatred is just too heavy a burden to bear in our hearts, loving each other is only way forward”.
As has always been the case, Mr Mengi twits would attract tens, if not, hundreds of comments from his followers who would either support of oppose the post.
Two days later, he posted a message that sought to encourage the spirit of saving among his followers
“In this New-Year let us be like children and remember we don’t live for ourselves. My 6 yr old son was talking to a business man and told him he was starting business because he believed it would make a lot of money. When asked why, he said it was for his children and grandchildren”.
He twitted several times between February and March whereby on March 18, he had this to write: “Ndoto yangu ni kushirikiana na serikali kutokemeza kabisa umasikini Tanzania (My dream is to work with the government in ensuring that we completely end poverty in Tanzania)”.
Having announced that he would work with NeuroGenBSI India to build a stem cell therapy in Tanzania, he twitted on April 10, 2019, he twitted: “I am in lndia to catch up with latest race on stem cell and gene engineering technology. Remember Mwalimu Nyerere once advised us to run while others walked. please pray for me to win this race”
His last twitter messages were posted on April 16 and on 22.
On 16th, he borrowed a quote from former President Jakaya Kikwete’s 2009 speech when he said: Midomo imeumbwa kusema.wanasema wanachofikiria hata kama ni uongo lakini watauamini, wataueneza na watakuhukumu kwa uongo wao. (The mouth is created so it can speak. People will speak what they think. Even if it may be false, they will believe in it. They will disseminate it and judge basing on the very same false information)”Kikwete 2009.”
On April 22, he quoted John D. Rockefeller when he twitted: “A friendship founded on business is better than a business founded on friendship.”
