Dar es Salaam. The United Arab Emirates (UAE), in collaboration with the international community, marked the International Day of Human Fraternity on February 4.
This day, established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2020, celebrates the values of tolerance, coexistence, and understanding between different faiths and cultures.
Khalifa Abdul Rahman Al Marzouqi, UAE Ambassador to Tanzania, emphasised the UAE's pivotal role in initiating this global initiative.
"The UAE, alongside the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Kingdom of Bahrain, and the Arab Republic of Egypt, spearheaded this effort to promote solidarity and unity among nations," he stated.
The Day draws inspiration from the historic meeting in Abu Dhabi in 2019 between Pope Francis, Head of the Catholic Church, and His Eminence the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Sheikh Ahmed El-Tayeb. This meeting culminated in the signing of the Document on Human Fraternity, a landmark document advocating for peaceful coexistence and mutual respect between diverse faiths.
Ambassador Al Marzouqi highlighted the significance of this occasion for the UAE, stating, "It acknowledges our continuous efforts in promoting interfaith dialogue and creating a tolerant society."
He further emphasized the UAE's unwavering commitment to international cooperation to combat division and discrimination, fostering peace and stability through intercultural and interfaith understanding.
The UAE's dedication to these values is further exemplified by the establishment of the Zayed Award for Human Fraternity in 2019. This prestigious award recognizes individuals and institutions contributing to peacebuilding, cultural exchange, and bridging societal divides.
Ambassador Al Marzouqi concluded by reiterating the UAE's position as a global champion of tolerance, peace, and security. He highlighted the UAE's diverse community of over 200 nationalities, where individuals freely practice their respective faiths.
He emphasized that the UAE's legal framework guarantees justice, equality, and respect for all, prohibiting hatred, extremism, and any factors that could incite division.
The UAE's leadership in promoting human fraternity serves as an inspiration for other nations, demonstrating the power of collaboration and understanding in building a more peaceful and tolerant world. As the world faces increasing challenges, the UAE's commitment to these values remains a beacon of hope for a brighter future.
