The incident occurred on Monday night. Before he died he was heard yelling out for help, when security guards responded and found him writhing in pain on a road in the university compound.

Dodoma. A first year student at the University of Dodoma (Udom), Fredrick Joseph, 25, has died after being attacked by unknown assailants while returning from a bar.

The incident occurred on Monday night. Before he died he was heard yelling out for help, when security guards responded and found him writhing in pain on a road in the university compound.

Speaking about the incident, Dodoma Regional Police Commander Lazaro Mambosasa said the student, who hailed from Musoma, Mara Region, was hit on various parts of his body.

He added that he was found at around 4am. However, he said preliminary investigation shows he quarelled with some people while at the pub in town and it is suspected they are the ones who attacked him.

“He died while he was being rushed to Dodoma Referral Hospital,” Mr Mambosasa noted.

Nobody has so far been arrested in connection with the incident. When asked whether he knew the names of the assailants, he responded that he was not in a position to give details as investigation was still going on.

“Since the pub owner is around, we are going to know if there was any altercation with his companions.

“I have instructed the OCD to look into that and find out the persons, who were drinking with him at the pub. They must be his fellow students and we need to know them,” Mr Mombosasa said.

A source, who preferred anonymity, saying he was not the police spokesman, claimed that Joseph was drinking with his fellow Udom students and after he got drunk, a fight broke out, pitting him against them.

“After they were separated, his colleagues waylaid him in some bush as he walked to Udom... when he approached they jumped onto him and beat him up badly, leaving him almost dead,” the source said.

The source added that after his assailants left him, security guards who were patrolling the university compound found him and took him to the police post at Chimwaga for a PF 3 , then rushed him to hospital.

The source concurred with the RPC, saying so far nobody was being held by the police because his assailants ran away.
