UNFPA boss dies in New York

The late Dr Babatunde Osotimehin

Dar es Salaam. Executive Director the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Dr Babatunde Osotimehin, 68, has passed away suddenly at his home in New York last night.

His death has been confirmed by the UNFPA Communication Analyst in Tanzania through a press release.

The press release shows that Dr Osotimehin was not suffering from any diseases until he suddenly died at his house while undertaking his normal responsibilities.

He has left behind a wife and five children.

Dr Osotimehin, a Nigerian, was a physician and public health expert, who became UNFPA’s fourth Executive Director on January 1, 2011, with the rank of United Nations Under-Secretary-General.

Before this appointment, Dr Osotimehin served as Nigeria’s Minister for Health. Prior to that he was Director-General of the National Agency for the Control of Aids, which coordinated HIV and Aids work in Nigeria.
