Mhini trains in Britain ahead of Hungary event

Dar es Salaam. Promising swimmer Dennis Mhini has started special training in the United Kingdom ahead of the Youth World Swimming Championship scheduled to be held in Budapest, Hungary.

Mhini is now under the St Felix swimming club famous swimming trainer, Sue Purchase. Purchase is also training other Tanzanian swimmers, Collins Saliboko, Delvin Barick and Christopher Fitzpatrick.

Also on the list are Sonia Tumiotto, Maia Tumiotto, Chichi Zengeni, Natalie Sanford and Smriti Gokarn.

Already Mhini started training with Purchase ahead of the event scheduled to start from August 20 to 25.

Other swimmers who will compete in the Budapest event are Barick of Mwanza Swimming Club and Dar es Salaam Swimming Club’s Kayla Temba.

The swimmers are under the sponsorship of World Swimming Federation (Fina). The list also includes young swimmers, Laila Rashid of Taliss-IST, Christopher Fitzpatrick from Mwanza, Christian Shirima and Khaleed Ladha, both from Dar es Salaam’s Taliss-IST. The swimmers are striving to raise funds for the quartet’s preparations and participation in the world event.

Speaking with The Citizen yesterday, Mhini said his target is to do the best in the event, which he is competing for the first time.

Mhini also competed in the Youths Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Dennis finished third in the 100m freestyle competition clocking 58.53 seconds to score 514 points before taking the third spot in 50m backstroke at 29.79 seconds and managing to garner 525 points.

“I have competed in the Youth Olympic Games and faced many challenges. I know what to do after Argentina’s lesson,” said Mhini.
