Dar es Salaam. The Tanzania Golf Union (TGU) has been impressed with the decision taken by the Indian High Commission to use golf in the celebration of the country’s 77 years of independence.
A week ago various golfers competed in the India-Tanzania Friendship Golf Tournament held at the Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club golf course.
Speaking with The Citizen yesterday, TGU chairman Gilman Kasiga said golfers who competed in the one-day event had been inspired with the move that also played a role in promoting the game in the country.
He said the event featured many high-profile figures including Information, Communication, and Information Technology minister Nape Nnauye.
Apart from awarding the winners as the guest of honour, Nnauye competed in the one-day stroke play event, explaining that the move is an honour for the game and he called on other institutions to follow in the footsteps of the Indian High Commission.
“We have many institutions in the country that can stage tournaments for special purposes. Really, we have been impressed with the move taken by the Indian High Commission. It was a very exciting and thrilling event,” said Kasiga.
The TGU boss said the event will also be held tomorrow at the Arusha Gymkhana Club golf course as part of the celebrations.
“There are so many golfers in Arusha, who have shown interest in competing in the event. You can see how the organisers have decided to promote the game,” he said.
According to Kasiga, TGU positively welcomes the stakeholders of the game for its development and it is in their strategic plan.
“We welcome the stakeholders of the game for its development. Special competitions like this encourage and enable people of different age groups to exchange ideas, network, refresh and compete,” he said.
In his statement, Nnauye also commended the organisers while calling other members of the public to take part in the game, which, he said, is not for the rich, but for all people of different age groups, including children, women, and the old.
"I’m excited about taking part in the game as well as being impressed by the organizers. I call upon all stakeholders to join hands and stage many tournaments. This will make us busy competing and keeping our bodies healthy,” he said.
For his part, Indian High Commissioner Binaya Pradhan commended all the participants in the event that featured more than 90 golfers from various clubs across the Mainland Tanzania.
