Kibaha. The Tanzania Olympic Committee (TOC) and the French Embassy in the country have launched a special programme dubbed Twende Olimpiki 2024.
The programme, which involves various youth sports events, apart from educating about the Olympic Games, also aims to promote the games that will be hosted in Paris next year.
Besides Coast Region, the programme will also be conducted in Mbeya and Singida regions.
At the launch, football and athletics administrators, Sunday Kayuni and Suleiman Nyambui respectively, provided Olympic education in the programme sponsored by the French Embassy.
On different occasions, the sports icons, who serve as trainers in the programme, said they would teach sports officials various aspects related to the value of the Olympics.
"On my part, I will teach about the required age, goals, and the procedure of the Olympics in football," said Kayuni. For his part, Nyambui mentioned that he would cover topics such as how to recruit players, choose venues, manage time, organize events, and their preparations.
"There is still a challenge of many people not understanding the Olympics," he added. Earlier, TOC Secretary-General Filbert Bayi said they have started training sports officials from councils and districts as they are involved in school sports programmes (Umisseta and Umitashumta), where talent is identified. Bayi said besides training and raising awareness ahead of the Olympic Games, the committee will conduct a special competition to be held in Singida.
"There will be various events, including athletics, football, and volleyball for boys and girls. The second phase will be next year, involving eight regions and Zanzibar," said Bayi. Meanwhile, TOC vice president Henry Tandau stated that the programme is a legacy, prepared by the host country of the Olympics in collaboration with participating nations to prepare people for the games.
“This season, Tanzania is expected to be represented in women’s football, judo, amateur boxing, swimming, and athletics in Paris, France, involving athletes from 206 nations,” said Tandau.
