Opposition clinch seven out of nine seats in Kilimanjaro

The opposition candidates who won include Mr Naghenjwa Kaboyoka (Same East), Dr Godwin Moleli (Siha), Mr Freeman Mbowe (Hai), Mr Joseph Selasini (Rombo), Mr Anthony Komu (Moshi Rural), Mr James Mbatia (Vunjo) and Mr Jafar Michael (Moshi Urban).

Moshi. The opposition has won in seven constituencies out of nine in Moshi region breaking the record set in 1995 when they only took six seats.

Back then, the opposition, which was buoyed by Mr Agustine Mrema popularity among voters after he defected to NCCR Mageuzi from ruling party, won in Hai, Siha, Rombo, Moshi rural, Moshi urban and Vunjo.

In 2000 and 2010 elections the ruling party managed to win back the Vunjo and Moshi rural seats. However in this year’s election the opposition managed to win Same East, Hai, Siha, Rombo, Moshi rural, Moshi urban and Vunjo seats.

The opposition candidates who won include Mr Naghenjwa Kaboyoka (Same East), Dr Godwin Moleli (Siha), Mr Freeman Mbowe (Hai), Mr Joseph Selasini (Rombo), Mr Anthony Komu (Moshi Rural), Mr James Mbatia (Vunjo) and Mr Jafar Michael (Moshi Urban).

The ruling party managed to win in two constituencies namely Mwanga where Minister for Water Jumanne Maghembe retained his seat and in Same West where Dr Mathayo David scooped victory.

In another development, Mr Davis Mosha, who contested the seat through ruling party, CCM conceded defeat. Mr Mosha commended Mr Maiko for winning the seat through a Short Message Service (SMS).

“I know during the campaign rallies we might have said unpleasant things to each other but I just want you to know it was just part of politics; we should burry our differences if any and work together for the development of the constituency,” the SMS reads in part.
