Dar es Salaam. The opposition ACT-Wazalendo yesterday accused the main opposition Chadema supporters playing dirty tricks to frustrate its campaigns ahead of October General Election.

The party’s planning and strategies secretary, Mr Habibu Mchange, alleged some Chadema supporters destroying their flags and posters bearing pictures of its candidates in some of its offices.

He said in the latest incident the party’s publicity secretary for Manonga constituency in Igunga district, Juma Karuja and eight other members were attacked by Chadema supporters. He said the victims are still hospitalised.

Speaking to this paper, Chadema deputy secretary general (Zanzibar) Salum Mwalimu asked ACT to stop using his party back (up) to gain cheap publicity adding that, Chadema does not compete with any other parties instead it compete with the ruling party, CCM.

But in a quick rejoinder, Chadema deputy secretary general (Zanzibar) Salum Mwalimu accused ACT of using Chadema’s back to gain cheap popularity, saying: “We are competing with CCM and not any other political party”.

Yesterday, ACT, which plans to officially launch it campaign at Zakhem ground in Mbagala, gave the police seven days the police to investigate the allegations and pleaded with Chadema to stop what they described as ‘dirty politics’.

“They are wasting our time and energy because instead of us discussing on crucial issues to build the party, we are discussing on how to go about these attacks, if it happens the incidences occur again, we will direct deal with Chadema.

ACT’s Igunga Urban, Athuman Salehe confirmed the attacks which he said were carried out by four men riding on two motorcycle and used bicycle padlocks to beat their members.

“The attackers even blocked the path to the police station to prevent us from reporting the incident that day.

The party’s Finance and Resource Secretary, Peter Mwambuja, said the Sunday campaign launch will be attended members of parliament from other parties including Chadema, CCM and CUF.

He said, the party’s national leaders are expected to lead the members to campaign for their presidential candidate Anna Mghwira, the only woman vying for the top office in the land.
