Editorial: Solve Zanzibar alcohol crisis

Authorities must act swiftly to end the alcohol shortage in Zanzibar. The predicament, initially a subtle concern, has snowballed into a significant threat to the island’s position in the tourism sector.

As Zanzibar emerges from the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic, self-inflicted risks jeopardise the hard-earned recovery of its tourism industry. Reports attribute the shortages to delays in granting licences to new importers after the refusal to renew approvals for established ones.

Authorities must acknowledge the gravity of this situation and understand that the tourism industry is a linchpin in Zanzibar’s economy. Swift and decisive action is imperative to secure a stable alcohol supply chain and avert further damage to the island’s reputation.

Emergency measures should be taken to address the problem while the new suppliers still position themselves to meet the stringent requirements set by beer manufacturers.

It is time for the authorities to uncork a solution and ensure that both new and established suppliers meet the necessary standards.

By doing so, Zanzibar can not only preserve its allure but also foster a conducive environment for the sustained growth of its crucial tourism sector.
