Dar es Salaam. The national Under-17 soccer team coach, Oscar Mirambo, says his players are ready for any tactical surprises his rivals might spring during the 2019 Africa Youth tournament.
The qualifiers for the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations will, for the first time since the tournament’s inception, be played on a zonal basis to determine seven teams to join host Tanzania for next year’s finals.
Unveiling his 26-member provisional squad for the qualifiers, Mirambo said yesterday that his boys will leave their mark in the ten-team tournament.
Mirambo’s boys will launch their campaign in the tournament against Burundi on Saturday at the National Stadium. “My players are in high spirits, raring to start their campaign in the championship with a bang,” the coach said.
“We know that, for us, the tournament will serve as a beneficial warm-up ahead of next year’s Africa Youth Championship finals,” he added.
Serengeti Boys, as the national youth team is popularly known, are now camping at Azam Complex on the suburbs of the city.
According to Mirambo, his final squad will consist of 23 players.
Players making up the provisional squad are Mwinyi Abdallah, Shaban Kimwaga, Bernard Castory, Alphonce Mabula and Lenox Chande.
Others are Salum Lupepo, Amiri Njeru, Pascal Msindo, Mustapha Nankuku, Morice Michael, Jefferson Thomas, Keffa James, Said Zanda, Edison Mshirakandi and Edmund Godfrey.
Also on the list are Ladack Juma, Jafary Mtoo, Kelvin Pius, Salum Ally, Agiri Ngoda, Ally Hamis , Bruno Nataly , Ben Starkie, Mohamed Abdallah, Dominic Paul and Erick Boniphace.
Rwanda and Sudan will also face off on Saturday in the Group A match at the Azam Complex.
Tanzania’s Serengeti Boys, Rwanda, Burundi and Sudan are in Group A together with Somalia.
Group B consists of Uganda, Kenya, South Sudan, Ethiopia and Djibouti.
