Freedom torch to illuminate Mtwara as community unites for development and CAF final

What you need to know:

  • The Municipal Director, Mwalimu Nyange, has called on the public to turn out in large numbers to welcome the national symbol and visit the various project sites earmarked for inspection.

Mtwara. The Mtwara Mikindani Municipality is set to receive the Freedom Torch tomorrow, which will tour six key development projects within the municipality.

Ahead of the official reception, a jogging event was held today, 24 May 2025, to mobilise residents to actively participate in welcoming the torch and attending the overnight vigil at the Saba Saba grounds.

The Municipal Director, Mwalimu Nyange, has called on the public to turn out in large numbers to welcome the national symbol and visit the various project sites earmarked for inspection.

“I sincerely urge the public to show up for the six projects. Those not in the convoy can join us at the project sites, full of energy. The vigil will feature two major events: the Freedom Torch vigil and a live screening of the CAF Confederation Cup final, where Simba SC will be aiming to lift the trophy,” said Nyange.

Among the projects set to be visited are a youth-led brick-making initiative in Ufukoni, the Mwera water supply project, Tandika Secondary School, and the laying of a foundation stone for the Mtawanya Health Centre.

Jogging participants expressed their appreciation to the organisers and encouraged fellow citizens not only to attend the Freedom Torch events but also to maintain regular physical activity.

Mauridi Salmini urged the community to fully participate in welcoming the torch and to adopt physical fitness as part of their daily routine, even from home. He also called on leaders to set an example by engaging in exercise alongside the public.

The jogging event was supported by the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC), represented by Marie Msellemu, Head of Public Relations and Communications, who underscored Mtwara’s importance as the source of the country’s natural gas.

“We’re here in Mtwara, the source of natural gas. We’ve come home to energise the Freedom Torch relay, which will take place tomorrow. Our gas facilities are in Madimba, producing electricity and clean cooking energy, strongly championed by President Samia,” said Msellemu.

She added that TPDC has established 20 oil and gas clubs nationwide, which have united to support national development through the Freedom Torch initiative.
