Dar es Salaam. Sanlam Insurance has reaffirmed its commitment to the NBC Dodoma Marathon by unveiling a strategic initiative aimed at using this year’s event to raise public awareness on the importance of insurance.

The sixth edition of the annual marathon is scheduled to take place on 27 July in Dodoma.

The announcement was made by the company’s Chief Financial Officer, Mika Samwel, during an event held yesterday in Dar es Salaam, marking Sanlam’s sixth consecutive year as a key sponsor of the race.

Samwel said Sanlam intends to leverage the marathon’s large and diverse audience from elite runners to community groups  as a platform to promote insurance literacy across the country.

He emphasised that Sanlam views the marathon as more than just a sports event, describing it as “a powerful tool for community education.”

“Beyond supporting the race, we are committed to championing causes such as the fight against cervical cancer, the training of 200 additional midwives, and the introduction of a pioneering programme to train 100 nurses in autism care,” he said.

Samwel further highlighted the pressing need for increased public understanding of insurance in Tanzania. “Many stakeholders in the sports sector and the wider public still do not fully appreciate the value of health, life, and business insurance. We want to change that through outreach initiatives like this marathon,” he said.

For his part, NBC’s Head of Communications and Public Relations, Godwin Semunyu, praised Sanlam for its continued support.

Semunyu said the initiative underscores NBC’s dedication to using the marathon as a platform for social impact, aligning with Sanlam’s educational mission.

“Our joint target is to raise Sh700 million to fund various health and community development projects.

Sanlam’s support is vital, and we remain committed to ensuring that the importance of insurance reaches all sectors of society,” said Semunyu.

Meanwhile, Chairperson of the NBC Dodoma Marathon Organising Committee, Tatiana Masimba, reflected on the marathon’s growth since its inception.

Now in its sixth year, the event has become a source of income for athletes, spurred local job creation, and helped prepare Tanzanian runners for international competitions.

“The marathon draws considerable local and international interest. Registrations are currently open via www.events.nbc.co.tz,” she said. As momentum builds towards the race day, organisers hope the partnership between NBC and Sanlam will not only deliver a memorable sporting occasion but also foster a deeper understanding of insurance’s role in everyday life.
