Dar es Salaam. Tanzanian lady golfers Madina Idd and Vicky Elias are set to compete in the Kenya Ladies Golf Union (KLGU) Amateur Stroke Play Championships, scheduled to take place from May 2 to 4 at the prestigious Sigona Golf Course.

The event, organized by KLGU and sanctioned by the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), will bring together top female amateur golfers from across the continent, offering them a platform to showcase their skills and earn valuable ranking points. Vicky, representing Lugalo’s TPDF Golf Club, will depart the country tomorrow to participate in the highly competitive 54-hole tournament.

She has expressed confidence in her preparations and is determined to perform at her best.

“I have trained well ahead of the tournament, and my target is to do my best. It will be a tough competition as every golfer will be aiming for the top honours,” said Vicky, who recently finished fifth at the Ruiru event with a total of 253 strokes.

Joining her is fellow Tanzanian Madina Idd from Arusha Gymkhana Club, who has also been training rigorously for the championship. Madina narrowly missed out on the title at the recent Ruiru tournament, finishing second with a score of +8, just one stroke behind Kenya’s Joyce Wanjiru.

“I led after the first 36 holes, but being overtaken by one stroke in the final 18 holes cost me the title.

This time, I will focus more and aim for the championship,” said Madina, who has consistently been Tanzania’s top performer in international events. Madina noted that the experience gained at the KLGU Meeting at Ruiru greatly improved the quality of Tanzanian golfers competing abroad.

Tanzania had two players — Madina and Vicky — finishing in the Top Five at that event, a testament to the country’s growing presence in regional golf competitions.

Joyce Wanjiru, who trailed Madina by one stroke after two rounds, made a strong comeback in the final stretch to finish with a +7 score, edging Madina by just one shot.

Both Vicky and Madina’s participation in the KLGU Championships symbolizes the rising stature of Tanzanian women’s golf in East Africa, especially as they compete against golfers from nations with long-established traditions in the sport.

The tournament will follow a stroke play format, demanding high levels of accuracy, consistency, and endurance over three days of intense competition.
