  • Sports, long recognised globally as a tool for social inclusion and empowerment, are increasingly being embraced as part of Tanzania’s youth agenda

Dar es Salaam. With more than 60 percent of Tanzania’s population under the age of 25, the country’s youth are central to its present and future. Yet many young people still lack access to safe and structured spaces for recreation, mentor ship and talent development.

Sports, long recognised globally as a tool for social inclusion and empowerment, are increasingly being embraced as part of Tanzania’s youth agenda.

On August 29, 2025, Vodacom Tanzania PLC deepened this commitment by launching a partnership with Don Bosco Oysterbay Vocational Training Centre (VTC), centred on basketball development. The initiative included the rehabilitation of a local basketball court into a safe, modern space for training and competition.

Vodacom also announced its sponsorship of the Basketball Dar es Salaam League (BDL), underscoring its aim to nurture young talent and promote community growth. “Our investments extend beyond sports; we are committed to nurturing the potential of young people through education and community engagement.

By providing scholarships and improving sports facilities, we aim to create opportunities that inspire and empower the youth,” said Zuweina Farah, Vodacom’s External Affairs Director.

This is not Vodacom’s first sports-driven empowerment programme. The company also supports Twende Butiama, a national cycling event promoting unity, health and environmental conservation.

The annual event draws cyclists of all ages, including youth from across Tanzania and neighbouring countries, in a celebration of heritage and community spirit. The company’s efforts align closely with national development priorities.

Tanzania’s Development Vision 2050 highlights investment in youth as a cornerstone of the country’s progress, recognising sports as a driver of physical health, talent development and social cohesion.

Similarly, the National Youth Development Policy (2007) stresses the importance of creating enabling environments for youth participation in national development through sports, education and community engagement.

Observers say the Vodacom–Don Bosco partnership demonstrates how corporate investment can complement government policy.

By combining infrastructure upgrades with educational opportunities and community involvement, it offers a practical model for youth empowerment.

“This partnership goes beyond sponsorship,” said one sports development stakeholder at the launch.
