Yusufali beats all at Arusha Open golf tournament

Arusha. Muzaffar Yusufali is the overall winner of the Arusha Open Golf Tournament on Sunday with 139 scores. In the tournament organised by the Tanzania Golf Union (TGU) at the Gymkhana grounds here, the hotelier who has been playing golf for 30 years, was declared the net prize overall.

The 53 year-old Yusufali is also the Arusha golf captain.

The runners-up in the Net Prize was Francis Julius who managed 143 scores, and Uliwa Uliwa scored 144 to finish third while Arun Lodhia finished fourth with 149.

The gross winner was Jimmy Mollel with 147. He was closely followed by Isaac Wanyecha (148).

A total of 75 players took part in the tournament that also featured students who were invited in efforts to promote the game in the country.

Other net prizes went to Hiten Athumani who scored 69 and Madina Iddi, the only lady who took part in the championship.

Arun Lodia, the managing director of Lodhia Group of Companies which sponsored the two-day tournament, presented the awards to the winners during a prize-giving ceremony at the Gymkhana Club on Sunday afternoon.

Speaking to reporters at the occasion, Yusufali said efforts were underway to promote golf.

He said that more people are being encouraged to play the game which, he observed, has been wrongly considered to be the preserve of the rich. 

He added that Arusha has a beautiful golf course with with 36 holes and that a new 18 hole playing ground to be known as Kili Golf Course would be opened soon at  Dolly Estate on the outskirts of the city.
