Sound laws, transparency driving investor confidence in Zanzibar, says Speaker

Unguja. Speaker of the Zanzibar House of Representatives, Zubeir Ali Maulid, has said that sound laws and transparent governance continue to attract major investors to the islands—boosting economic growth and strengthening confidence in Zanzibar’s investment climate.

He said both the House of Representatives and the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar remain committed to ensuring a transparent and business-friendly environment that safeguards consumers, workers, and the environment.

Speaker Zubeir made the remarks on October 11, 2025, during the inauguration of a new Hisense electronics store in Unguja, a move he said supports the government’s efforts to increase access to quality products and curb the importation of substandard goods.

“We now have strong investment laws, and we will continue to refine them to attract more investors for the broader benefit of our national economy,” said Speaker Zubeir.

Beyond legislation, he noted that Zanzibar has introduced progressive policies that encourage both local and foreign investments.

“We welcome investors who bring not only capital but also discipline—respect for the law, job creation, capacity building, and a sense of social responsibility,” he added.

On the new Hisense outlet, Speaker Zubeir said the store’s launch reflects the government’s push to eliminate the importation of low-quality electronics that harm consumers and the environment.

“These electronic products are energy-efficient and environmentally friendly, which supports our sustainability agenda,” he said.

He further revealed that the government is formulating additional consumer protection regulations to address complaints about poor-quality products.

“Investments like this are highly welcome. Many consumers buy expensive branded items from ordinary shops only to have them break down within a year, often without a warranty. Here, customers are guaranteed more than a year of service,” he explained.

Electronic Hub Director, Naeem Sikandar, said the decision to invest in Zanzibar is part of the company’s broader goal to support national economic growth and provide citizens with quality and affordable products.

“Hisense’s presence here positions Zanzibar as an emerging hub for technology and commerce, paving the way for further investment in the electronics sector,” said Sikandar.

Hisense South Africa’s Deputy General Manager, Luna Nortje, highlighted Zanzibar’s strategic importance in East Africa, noting that the island’s growing economy provides a strong base for regional business expansion.

The new Hisense store is expected to create 100 direct jobs for young people while promoting technology adoption, innovation, and local skills development—further anchoring Zanzibar’s transformation into a competitive investment destination.
