Sumatra revokes licences of 18 bus drivers

Sumatra Director General Gilliard Gewe told reporters in Dar es Salaam on Monday that the licences were revoked after the bus drivers went on strike last week in a bid to force the court set free fellow drivers who were arrested for violation of road safety regulations.

Dar es Salaam. The Surface and Marine Transport Regulatory Authority (Sumatra) has revoked the licences of 18 bus drivers for alleged violation of regulations.

Sumatra Director General Gilliard Gewe told reporters in Dar es Salaam on Monday that the licences were revoked after the bus drivers went on strike last week.

They went on strike to in a bid to force the court set free fellow drivers who were arrested for violation of road safety regulations.

Mr Gewe also revealed that the authority plans to take to court UDA-RT, which operates the Rapid bus Transport for overcharging passengers.

According to Mr Gewe, Sumatra has warned UDA-RT several times, but some officials of the company   continue to set higher bus fares.

“We are aware of passengers’ complaints and we have warned UDA-RT several times, but they have not bothered to comply and we shall take legal action against them,” warned Mr Gewe.
