UN set aside Sh448 billion to support development projects

The Agency has so far disbursed Sh358 billion to finance various development activities

Dar es Salaam. As United Nations (UN) celebrates 72nd anniversary in October 24, it has disbursed about $160 million (Sh358.4 billion) to the government to support various development activities in the country in a period between January and October.

This was revealed by the Resident Coordinator of the UN Systems in Tanzania Mr Alvaro Rodriguez on Thursday, October 19, at a press conference.

According to Mr Rodriguez, UN spends an average of $200 million (Sh448 billion) to support development project annually.

He said half of support was directed to refugees and the remain to various development activities. He noted 72 years of UN operations were paramount to Tanzania development, considering there were number of challenges such as refugees and climate change, which the country could not overcome single handedly.

"Tanzania and UN have had a good relationship in many years. While this country experiences various changes toward industrial economy, the UN will extend their support in making sure the goal achieved,” he said

He stressed that UN is committed to support the country in its industrial economy agenda by invest technical support through its agencies.

He said the UN has interested in protect the environment in making sure youth are getting employment and women who went for maternity should not lost their jobs.

Also the area of agro processing and agriculture in general, adding UN believe s that those areas are important in building an industrialised nation.

"In order for this country achieve its goal there is need of build foundation to young people and put good environmental for private sectors so that can help the country achieve its ambition of become the middle income," he said

Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Regional, International and East Africa Cooperation, Dr Suzan Kolimba said Vice President Samia Suhulu Hassan is expected to be the guest of honor in the marking of 72nd UN anniversary in the country.

Dr Kolimba said the theme of this year goes parallel with the country's industrialisation agenda, adding that the UN has been fore front in support the initiative.

"UN have partnered with Tanzania for many years and supported various development programs such as refugees, so the 72 years its important to the country and we will strength the relationship,” she said.
