Lowassa attends case hearing of Chadema top leaders involving death of Akwilina

Dar es Salaam. Former Prime Minister Edward Lowassa ia among those who have arrived at the Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday to attend a case hearing involving Chadema top brass leaders. The leaders are accused of staging unlawful demonstrations in the city during the run up to the February parliamentary by-election in Kinondoni that resulted into the death of the National Institute of Transport student Akwilina Akwilini when police fired bullets to disperse them.
The Citizen witnessed Mr Lowassa, who was the main opposition party’s presidential flag bearer in the 2015 general election, arriving at the court premises before entering the court chamber to wait for commencement of court procedures.
Some of Chadema top leaders charged alongside Chadema's national chairman Mr Freeman Mbowe were seen arriving at the court chamber ready for the case hearing which is brought before the Principal Resident Magistrate Wilbard Mashauri.
Apart from Mr Mbowe, others are party secretary general Dr Vincent Mashinji, party’s deputy secretary general (Mainland) John Mnyika, Bunda Urban legislator Ester Bulaya and Iringa Urban lawmaker Peter Msigwa.
They are facing counts of sedition, rising discontents and ill will for unlawful purposes.
