The Bariadi District Council expects to register 254, 865 residents aged 18 and above with the National Identification Authority (Nida). Addressing a council committee at the weekend, a Nida official, Ms Careen Kuwite, urged district leaders to raise public awareness on the importance of having national identity cards.

The official added that every citizen had a right to register with Nida, thus urging district council officials to utilise seminars and rallies.

“When this exercise starts, we expect to register at least 254,865 residents in Bariadi District. So, I appeal to councillors and other leaders to sensitise residents to turn out in big numbers to register and obtain national identification cards,” she noted. However, she said what was required included the following documents: a birth certificate, a voters’ registration card,, a clinic card and other recognised government documents.

According to Bariadi District Council chairman Kiberiti Buyamba, the move is important and through national identification cards, the government will be able to identify, who is a genuine citizen and who is not and this helps the government to operate smoothly and efficiently.
